Carpet Cleaning Playbook

November is sofa month. The 30-day upholstery and rug play before the guests arrive

Holiday hosts book carpet cleaning, then notice the couch. A 30-day plan to sell upholstery and area rug cleaning before Thanksgiving and add to every ticket.

Every November the same thing happens. A homeowner books a carpet cleaning before the family comes for Thanksgiving, the tech finishes the living room, and the homeowner looks at the couch and says, "Can you do that too?" Too often the tech is not set up for it or does not have time, and the job goes to someone else or does not happen.

The next 30 days are the best time of year to sell upholstery and area rug cleaning. Hosts are looking at their furniture through their guests' eyes. Here is a plan to turn that into bigger tickets and new bookings.

Why upholstery and rugs, and why now

  • It is the thing guests sit on. A host can live with a carpet stain under the dining table. A stained couch in the living room is the first thing people see.
  • It adds to tickets you already have. Adding a sofa or a rug to a carpet job means more revenue without another drive.
  • It sells to people with no carpet. Many newer homes are all hard floors. Those homeowners will never book carpet cleaning, but they have a sofa, dining chairs and area rugs.

Pricing varies by market, but a common range is $100 to $200 for a standard sofa, less for a loveseat or chair, and $2 to $5 a square foot for area rugs depending on fiber and whether you clean them in plant or on site.

Week one: put it everywhere you already are

Your price page. Add upholstery and rug pricing with clear examples. "Three-seat sofa, from $129. Loveseat, from $99. Dining chairs, $15 to $25 each." The pricing guide covers how to show ranges without getting trapped by them.

Your Google profile. Add "Upholstery cleaning" and "Area rug cleaning" as services with a short description and a starting price. Add photos of before and after sofa cleaning. 50% of carpet cleaning listings have no hours listed, so if yours is one of them, fix that at the same time. The Google Business Profile guide walks through every field.

Your booking script. When someone calls to book carpet, the person on the phone asks one question: "Since you have family coming, do you want us to do the sofa or any rugs while we're there? It's usually $99 to $150 for a couch." That one line is most of this plan.

Week two: text your past customers

Send a short text to everyone who booked with you in the past 18 months:

"Hi [name], it's [company]. We're booking pre-Thanksgiving cleanings now. This year we're also doing sofas, chairs and area rugs. Want me to add a couch to your visit? Reply with a day that works and I'll check the schedule."

Then send a different text to customers who have only hard floors or who told you they ripped out carpet:

"Hi [name], it's [company]. Even without carpet, we can clean your sofa, chairs and area rugs before the holidays. Most couches take under an hour. Want a quote?"

The slow season guide explains why a past-customer list is the cheapest marketing you have.

Week three: run a small local ad

A short video does the selling. A tech cleaning one cushion of a dark sofa, the wand pass showing the clean stripe, then the whole couch. Fifteen seconds. Caption: "Sofa cleaning before Thanksgiving. Most couches done in under an hour. [Town]."

Run it to homeowners within your service area for two weeks. A clearly hypothetical budget of $15 to $25 a day is enough to test it. The Facebook and Instagram ads guide covers targeting and what to avoid.

Week four: fill the gaps and ask for reviews

The week before Thanksgiving fills up fast. Keep a short list of customers who said "maybe" and text them on Monday: "We have two openings left on Wednesday morning before Thanksgiving. Want one?"

Then, after every upholstery job, ask for a review. Mention the sofa. "If you're happy with how the couch came out, a quick review helps us a lot: [link]." Reviews that mention upholstery help you show up for upholstery searches. The median carpet cleaner in our data has 12 reviews and the top 10% have 161 or more, so a busy November is your chance to close that gap. The review guide has the full ask.

Do not miss the calls

Pre-holiday customers call during the day while you are on a job. If they get voicemail, they call the next company on the list. A text-back within a few minutes keeps them. The calculator shows what a missed holiday call costs.

The 30 days, short

  • Week one: add upholstery and rugs to your price page, profile and phone script
  • Week two: text past customers, with a separate message for hard-floor homes
  • Week three: run a small local video ad
  • Week four: fill last openings and ask for reviews that mention the sofa
