The top quarter of carpet cleaners starts at 51 reviews. How to get there by spring
A quarter of carpet cleaners on Google have 51 reviews or more. Here is the weekly plan to reach that line before the spring busy season starts.
Most carpet cleaners know they need more reviews. Few know how many is enough to stop losing the map to the company down the road.
Our benchmark report gives a clear line. Across 24,196 carpet cleaning companies on Google, the median has 12 reviews. The top quarter starts at 51. The top 10% starts at 161.
That 51 number is the one to circle this week. Here is why it matters and how to reach it before spring.
Why the 75th percentile is the useful target
The median tells you that half the field is thin. 45.1% of carpet cleaners have fewer than 10 reviews, and 13.7% have none at all. Beating the median is good, but it does not separate you from the pack in a busy metro.
The top 10% line is a long way off for most owners. Those companies often have a decade of jobs and several trucks.
The 75th percentile sits in between. In most towns, a profile at that level is one of the two or three listings a homeowner compares. It looks established without needing years of history. And it is reachable for a one or two truck operation in a single season.
Do the math on your own gap
Open your Google profile and write down your review count. Subtract it from 51. That is your gap.
Now count your jobs. Take a hypothetical owner with 20 reviews who does 15 jobs a week. If one in four customers leaves a review when asked the right way, that is about four new reviews a week. Twenty weeks gets close to 80 new reviews. That clears the line by spring with room to spare.
If you only ask some customers, or only ask by email a week later, the rate drops fast. The plan below fixes the ask, not the job count.
The weekly plan
Monday: build the list
Pull every customer from the last 18 months from your scheduling software or invoice book. Remove anyone who complained or got a redo. What is left is your warm list. Holiday cleaners are often repeat customers, so many of them will remember you.
Every job: ask at the door
The best moment is when the customer walks on the clean carpet for the first time. The tech says something plain:
"Glad it came out the way you wanted. Most people find us on Google, so a quick review helps us a lot. I'll text you the link right now."
Then the tech sends the link before leaving the driveway. Not tonight. Not on Friday. The reviews guide has more versions of this script, including one for pet odor jobs where the customer may be embarrassed.
Same evening: one reminder
If no review has come in by evening, send one short text:
"Thanks again for having us today. Here is that review link if you have a minute: [link]. It helps a small business like ours a lot."
One reminder. No more. A second nudge starts to feel like pressure.
Wednesday: work the warm list
Send ten texts a week to past customers on your list. Keep it personal:
"Hi Dana, this is Mike from Fresh Step. We cleaned your living room and stairs last spring. If you were happy with it, a short Google review would mean a lot: [link]."
Ten a week is slow enough to stay personal and fast enough to add a few reviews on its own.
Friday: reply to every review
Answer every new review with a sentence that mentions the service and the town. "Thanks, Dana. Glad the stairs in your Sandy home came out clean." This helps the next shopper and shows Google an active profile.
What not to do
Do not buy reviews or swap them with other businesses. Google removes them and can suspend the profile.
Do not offer a discount in exchange for a review. Google's rules forbid incentives, and it reads badly when a customer mentions it.
Do not send everyone the link on the same day. A spike of 40 reviews in a week after months of silence looks odd. A steady weekly pace looks like a real business.
The rating matters too
Volume is half the picture. The average carpet cleaner sits at 4.8 stars, and 87.8% are at 4.5 or above. A homeowner comparing three listings will skip one under 4.5 almost every time.
If you have an old bad review, reply calmly and once. Then let the new ones bury it. Ten fresh five-star reviews do more than any argument in the reply box.
Pair it with a working website
Reviews bring the click. Something has to catch it. Carpet cleaners with a website hold a median of 24 reviews, against 3 for those without one. A site with clear prices and a tap-to-call button turns profile visitors into booked jobs. The website essentials guide lists what it needs.
