- The short version
If you run Google Ads for your carpet cleaning company, part of your budget is almost certainly paying for people who will never book you. They wanted to rent a machine at the grocery store, buy new carpet, or apply for a technician job.
You can find and cut most of that waste in under an hour. Do it now, before you raise budgets for the holiday rush, so the extra money goes to real jobs.
Before you start (5 minutes)
Open Google Ads on a laptop, not your phone. Set the date range to the last 90 days. You need enough data to see patterns, and 90 days covers the late summer slowdown and the start of fall.
Have a notepad or a blank spreadsheet open. You will build one list as you go: words that should never trigger your ads.
Step 1: Open the search terms report (5 minutes)
Go to Campaigns, then Insights and reports, then Search terms. This shows what people actually typed before they clicked your ad. It is often different from the keywords you chose.
Sort by cost, highest first. The expensive mistakes are at the top, so start there.
Step 2: Mark the obvious waste (15 minutes)
Read down the list and flag any term that matches one of these patterns. These are the ones that show up in almost every carpet cleaning account.
- Rentals and DIY: rent, rental, machine, Rug Doctor, Bissell, shampooer, solution, how to
- Buying carpet: install, installation, new carpet, carpet store, flooring, remnants
- Jobs: jobs, hiring, salary, technician job, near me hiring
- Training and supplies: certification, course, IICRC class, wholesale, supply
- Free: free, cheap DIY, coupon codes for rentals
Write each word on your list. You do not need the whole phrase. One word like "rental" blocks every search that contains it.
Step 3: Check your service area leaks (10 minutes)
Scroll for town names. If you see clicks from cities you do not serve, your location setting is likely set to "presence or interest." Change it to "presence" only, under campaign settings, then Locations. This one switch often removes a surprising share of wasted clicks.
Also look for services you do not offer. If you do not clean tile, commercial buildings or air ducts, add those words to the list too. A homeowner searching "tile and grout cleaning" who lands on a carpet-only page costs you a click and leaves.
Step 4: Add the negative list (10 minutes)
Go to Tools, then Shared library, then Negative keyword lists. Create one called "Never carpet jobs" and paste in every word from your notepad. Apply it to every search campaign.
A shared list means you fix this once. When you start a holiday campaign or a sofa cleaning campaign next month, attach the same list and the waste never starts.
Use broad match for single words like "rental" and "jobs." For two-word ideas that could block real customers, use phrase match. "Carpet installation" as a phrase is safe. "Install" alone could block a homeowner searching "clean carpet after install," which is a real job.
Step 5: Find the terms worth more money (10 minutes)
Go back to the search terms report and sort by conversions. The terms at the top are your best customers telling you what they type. Common winners in this trade include pet urine odor, stain removal, move-out cleaning and same-day service.
If one of those is only a search term and not a keyword yet, add it as a keyword so you can control its bid. Then make sure the ad sends that searcher to the right page. A pet odor search should land on a pet odor page, not your homepage. The Google Ads guide covers how to group these into ad groups.
Step 6: Set a reminder (2 minutes)
Put a 20-minute repeating calendar reminder every two weeks through January. New waste shows up as search habits change, especially around the holidays when DIY rental searches spike.
What this does to your numbers
Here is a hypothetical. A carpet cleaner spends $1,500 a month on search ads, and 20% of clicks are rental, job and install searches. Cutting those frees about $300 a month. At a cost of $60 per booked job, that is five more jobs a month from the same budget, without raising a bid.
The account is only half of it. Ads send people to your Google profile and website, and those still have to close the sale. The median carpet cleaning company has 12 Google reviews, and those with a website hold a median of 24 reviews against 3 for those without. A clean ad account pointed at a thin profile still leaks. The benchmark report shows where your listing sits.
And every click you pay for should reach someone who answers. If calls go to voicemail during jobs, run your numbers through the calculator and read the missed calls guide before you raise any budget.
